Support
SnippetSelect keeps the text you type over and over (your email address, phone number, a standard reply) one click or one keyboard shortcut away. It lives in your Mac's menu bar.
Getting started
- Open SnippetSelect. Its icon appears in the menu bar at the top right of your screen. There's no Dock icon.
- Type a Name (e.g. "Email") and the Value to copy (e.g. your email address), then click Add.
- Click the menu bar icon and choose the name, and the value is copied, ready to paste with ⌘V.
Keyboard shortcuts
- Your first ten snippets get ⌃⌥1 to ⌃⌥9 and ⌃⌥0 (Control + Option + number). They work in any app.
- ⌃⌥= opens SnippetSelect ready to add a new snippet.
- To change a shortcut, click the shortcut box next to a snippet and press the new keys. Esc cancels and ⌫ removes it.
Managing snippets
- Edit: double-click a snippet's name or value.
- Reorder: hover over a snippet and drag the ≡ handle on its left.
- Delete: hover over a snippet and click the trash icon (you'll be asked to confirm).
- Back up or move to another Mac: Settings › Export… saves a backup file; Settings › Import… adds snippets from one, or replaces yours with them.
Common questions
I can't find the app.
SnippetSelect runs in the menu bar, not the Dock. Look for its icon near the clock. If you have many menu bar icons, it may be hidden behind the camera notch on some MacBooks; quitting a few other menu bar apps will reveal it. You can always open its window with ⌃⌥=.
A keyboard shortcut doesn't work.
Another app may already use that key combination. If so, SnippetSelect shows its shortcut box with an orange outline. Click the box and choose a different shortcut.
How do I start SnippetSelect automatically?
Turn on Settings › Open at login. If macOS asks for approval, allow it in System Settings › General › Login Items.
Can I store passwords?
Snippets are stored on your Mac without extra encryption, and copied text goes on the clipboard where other apps can read it. Use a password manager for passwords.
Does it work with VoiceOver?
Yes. Each snippet is read with its name and value, and its actions (Copy value, Edit name, Edit value, Move up, Move down, Delete) are available from the VoiceOver actions menu.
How do I remove everything?
Use Settings › Clear All…, then quit SnippetSelect from its menu and move it from Applications to the Trash. See the privacy policy for where its data is kept.
Requirements
macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
